In the context of alternative educational materials , QA involves ensuring that the materials used within learning environments are fit for purpose, of high quality, and meet the needs of all learners. Inclusive QA is paramount as it focuses on inclusion and accessibility – two crucial aspects when creating materials for everyone to use.

QA Frameworks and Rubrics

A QA framework is a systematic approach to ensuring the quality of products or services, and typically involves policies, procedures, and practices in order to meet specific quality standards. To audit resources and ensure that they comply with an organization’s requirements, a review tool such as a checklist, scorecard or rubric/matrix can be used. This “answer key” system will allow for a more efficient review process, with each standard measured by scores to indicate adherence or noncompliance.


The Impact of Poor QA

The negative impact of poor QA on learning and development materials can lead to a variety of negative impacts such as:

  • Poor Engagement from students
    • Poor QA can result in learning materials that are not engaging or relevant to learners. This can lead to disinterest in the material and a lack of motivation to complete the learning.
  • Low Compliance/Litigation or Due Proces
    • If educators do not fully understand the training materials due to poor quality assurance, they may not follow best practices.  This could lead to safety hazards, low productivity, and potential legal issues.
  • Higher Costs
    • If the learning products are ineffective, learners may need to repeat courses or additional training may be necessary. This can lead to higher costs associated with training and development.
